On electric coil and radiant cooktops, we most often see element failure and, on radiant glass models, failed temperature sensors beneath the glass surface that cause inaccurate heat regulation, sometimes presenting as a burner that runs noticeably hotter or cooler than its dial setting suggests.
Induction cooktops fail less often mechanically since there's no exposed heating element or open flame, but when they do fail, it's typically the control board or the induction coil driver electronics, and diagnosing these requires different test equipment and expertise than a technician would use on gas or standard electric cooktops, which is worth knowing since not every appliance repair service is equally set up to handle induction technology correctly.

Cooktop Repair vs. Replacement: The Real Math

On a lower-to-mid-range cooktop, replacement of the whole unit is often comparable in cost to a glass panel replacement, while on a higher-end induction cooktop with a favorable overall condition otherwise, panel replacement can still make sense to preserve the rest of the investment, particularly on a cooktop that's less than a few years old.
